Each of us might suffer from a pain in the neck at some point during our lifetime, the way we feel it, experience it and perceive the pain will be different. When the pain becomes chronic neck pain a multidisciplinary treatment approach is often required. What are the Signs that my Neck Pain is chronic? What are The Symptoms?

Chronic neck pain is pain in the neck over a long period of time. It usually lasts more than three months. The pain can range from mild to severe.

Chronic neck pain may also cause you to have neck stiffness. Pain may be worse when moving your neck. The pain can be any type of pain including burning, sharp, dull, and tingling. The pain may spread to other parts of the body such as the shoulders and arms.


What can Cause Neck Pain?

The term “neck pain” is very simple and straight forward, however it is a very individual experience and the diagnosis, assessment and treatment is also based individually.

There are a whole range of causes for neck pain for example some of the most common causes are:

  • Someone sitting at a keyboard all day with their head tilted in a particular angle.
  • Sleeping in a strange position.
  • Lifting, twisting, bending, reaching.
  • Normal day to day activities can cause strain and pain.
  • Simply growing older is often a cause of pain in the neck.
  • Whiplash type injuries in car accidents (caused by Trauma)
  • Slip and fall type accidents (caused by Trauma)


What Symptoms Should I Expect?

The way we feel it, experience it and perceive the pain will be different.

  • Some people will find that their pain only occurs when they tilt their heads backwards or forward.
  • Others will feel neck pain when they turn their head to the left or to the right.
  • Some will suffer from headaches, dizziness and/or vertigo
  • Some experience pain that will only last a day or two,  Others will have pain for a week or two.
  • Still others will suffer ongoing chronic neck pain.


When Should I See a Doctor for Treatment?

For more severe pain and stiffness, if the symptoms last for more than a day or two, or if the pain is accompanied by arm pain, numbness or tingling, a visit to a health professional, such as a chiropractor or primary care physician, is generally advisable.

Based on its causes and its treatments and how neck pain, and chronic neck pain is a very complex issue. Because neck pain and chronic neck pain is so common in our society today, it is and will remain, a very important issue.
