Laser Back Surgery

Laser Back Surgery in Fort Worth : There’s not a day that goes by where someone doesn’t come in the office wanting to know if we offer laser back surgery. At Trinity, orthopedic doctor Dr. Larry Kjeldgaard has been using lasers in back surgery for years. It’s a good tool, and in the right hands it can be very effective. Dr. Kjeldgaard usually tells people that eye surgeons tend to condition people to believe that the involvement of lasers means that laser back surgery is pain-free, perfect, and easy. However, he also believes that this train of thought is a little too optimistic.

So, what’s the truth about laser spine surgery? In this video, Hurst orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Kjeldgaard talks about laser back surgery and what it means in terms of orthopedic surgery.

The Truth About Laser Back Surgery

Laser back surgery is a popular term online, but it can be very misleading. Lasers actually have very limited use in back surgery and are often considered to be a gimmick. A laser around the nerves, if used with indiscretion, can hurt the spine. It can hurt the nerve. You have to be very careful with a laser, and it takes a very skilled orthopedic surgeon to perform laser back surgery. When it’s appropriate, it’s a good modality. Laser surgery is not a cure-all. It’s not a panacea. It’s not the perfect fit for every spinal problem. However, lasers can be effective.

Our doctors and staff tend to prefer a more conservative approach, using pain management or physical therapy in place of surgery. However, they are surgeons, and they can perform any necessary surgery in order to get you back on your feet. There’s nothing magical about lasers, but Dr. Larry Kjeldgaard of Trinity Spine and Orthopedics knows how to use them and knows how to use them well.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Laser Back Surgery?

Typically someone who’s a younger individual with a one-level isolated disc problem off to the side of the spine are the best candidates for spine laser surgery. Many of the surgeries are one-day surgeries. You come in, have it done, and go home the same day. At Trinity Spine and Orthopedics, our doctors get you back on your feet. We get you walking almost immediately. When appropriate, we have physical therapists on staff, and we’re happy to
order physical therapy for any patient who needs it.
